Assessing the Artefactual Value

Around the 1940's, this cookbooklet would have been distributed for free. However, the current day monetary value is now $10! The significance of this cookbooklet is the amount of information one can extract from it.

From the "10 Famous Cakes" cookbooklet, we were able to understand how the world was like beyond the 1940's and from different points of views. From an economic point of view, we saw how the market for baking powders rose with the economy and then dropped with it during the post-war era in 1981. Since there were so many brands of baking powder, it was in elastic demand and the market structure was in perfect competition. Meaning that any changes of price would have an inverse effect on the quantity. With such competition, advertisement companies were heavily relied on and prompted the free distribution of the several cookbooklets.

The tough competition eventually led to legal actions by big companies who wanted to dominate the market. We saw how The Royal Baking Powder in particular, took legal actions towards aluminun-based baking powders in 1899. Which can explain why Magic Baking Powder is so heavily advertised with "contains no aluminum"!

In addition, "10 Famous Cakes" represented the industrialization of manufactured baked goods. As the patent applications for yeast products were soon being replaced by patents for non-yeast leavening products and kneading machines. Shortly after, premade mixes were produced and the creation of self-rising flour appeared in stores.

Perhaps another point of view one can analyze was the gender roles and dominancy women had in the kitchen. "10 Famous Cakes" features 10 different women from various occupations. The two things they all had in common, was that they were all successful in their own ways and that they exclusively used Magic Baking Powder. Since their occupations were explicitly stated, it showed that even the working woman had time to bake delicious treats. This promotes the purpose of baking powder, to save time and work needed to get fluffy baked goods. By researching each individual woman who was featured, we can learn how society actually had female icons who were considered cookery experts. These 10 extraordinary women, were famous faces from coast to coast, and each contributed in the rise of studying home economics!

From an economic to a societal norms point of view, our artefact provides a plethora of information! And this is why "10 Famous Cakes" is such a valuable asset to Canandian history. As one of the pages stated "Be sure to keep this leaflet. The recipes are valuable - not only for their interest, but because they will make you known as a baker of cakes that are always delicious perfection."(10 Famous Recipes Page 2)
