History of Weston
Founded in 1882, George Weston Limited, also known as Weston, is a major Canadian company in the public sector representing the country’s largest food and drug retail businesses. With multiple employees and several retail branches, they are able to serve Canadians various services such as food, health and wellness. Weston is also one of Canada’s leading bakers, offering a wide range of freshly baked products to the North American market.
History of wheat
Wheat was introduced to North America in the late 15th to early 16th century. It is suggested that wheat was first grown in Canada at Port-Royal around 1605 and the first exports were made in around 1654. As more women opted to purchase bread rather than make it at home, several small time bakeries began to evolve into large scale companies. Weston used this new trend within society to its benefit and began to mass produce bread. In October of 1897, George Weston unveiled his "Model Bakery," Canada's largest and most modern bread factory, at the corner of Soho and Phoebe streets in Toronto. This bakery was a huge success and sales skyrocketed. Following bread production, Weston began to mass produce cookies, tarts and several pastries. Without a doubt, Weston is indeed a successful pioneer within the baking industry.
History of food:
The first shipment of wheat exported from the then recently created province of Manitoba was received in 1867. By the 1870s, Red Fife was the most dominant wheat variety used by millers and bakers throughout Canada. It was believed to have defined the taste of bread in the decades after the Confederation. It was extensively adaptable to the unique climate of Western Canada; thus playing a key role in facilitating the colonization of the prairies by Canadian settlers prior to 1900.
