The History of The Magic of Olives – 35 Delicious New Recipes is hard to find. From searching the internet and library little information can be found on the McLaren company, however when looking online the company’s product is still sold at outlets such as Target and Walmart, however there is no company website or even a Wikipedia page for the company. The only information related to the company is the value of the cooking pamphlet, which is valued at five dollars Canadian (McLarens LTD).
In the cook book the area where the olives are grown is mentioned. Andalusia, Spain is described as a beautiful town with a rich history in the growing of olives (McLarens LTD). A large portion of the towns culture and economy is rooted heavily in the olive businesses as olive trees can be found all over the region, the town is ranked globally as one of the most populated olive tree nations in the world (UNESCO, 2017).
From analyzing the document, it is safe to say that the estimated date in which this cook book was published was sometime after the second world war. During World War two, canning became a popular form of preserving foods as it allowed families on the home front to ration their food and to save money to help in the war effort, canning was a patriotic way to support yourself, family, and country (USDA, 2018). Canning was invented by Nicolas Appert, a French confectioner in the 1790’s (Nummer, 2002).
Since the olives had to be imported from Spain to the U.S.A. it would be safe to say that it would have had to happen after the war as at that Spain was involved in a civil war that saw the Spanish government fighting off a militia comprised of their own citizens.
