Assessing the Artefactual Value

There are many values of this artifact today:

With regards to monetary value, there do not seem to be any booklets available on eBay, amazon or Kijiji. There is a price of $25 written in pencil on page five of the booklet which is perhaps what the University of Guelph library or a previous collection paid to purchase the ephemera. Also, Melissa tracked down approximate value of items and this booklet’s estimated purchase price was $15.

Sentimental value should be noted as well. It could be nostalgic for older people who may have been involved in the fishing industry at that time and who may have even worked for Canfisco. For younger readers, it could bring back happy memories of their Grandma’s recipes that she used when cooking with canned salmon.

Scholars can use it as a reference for other projects which are based on or have sections relating to fishery history and salmon canning history. Historians could also obtain information about the era in general. The details from the booklet provide information on marketing and societal changes of the time and can also be used to understand how the fishing industry affected the economy.

An additional value of the booklet is for education of the general public. There is detailed information provided on the types of commercial fishing boats, how fish are caught and aspects of canning fish. As a bonus, although the public interest may be to just gain knowledge on catching and canning fish, people may find it interesting to learn the history of the British Columbia fishing industry - I know I sure did.
