Assessing the Artefactual Value

The purchased artifactual value of this cook booklet is listed in the booklet as $5. There is no other price indicating that all of these cook booklets that are out there are valued at $5. Although the price is just a number, the historical value is much greater.

Historians observe the booklet to discover advertising patterns and how the cultural ideas have changed over time. It is quite useful to be able to compare and observe the writing style, the image quality, the fonts, the colours utilized, the intended audience, the “new” technologies that we take for granted today such as food processing, and the location of publication.

On the last page of the cook booklet there is a contest called “Lipton Title Contest” in order to participate you must provide the image shown with a caption. The prizes for the winners are listed from $10 to $10,000, this provides historians with a dollar value and they are able to compare this information with contest prizes today. They are able to distinguish the difference of the value of ideas back then versus now.

The public has uses for this cook booklet as well. Many people use cook booklets for interest purposes such as collecting and cooking. The cook booklets are interesting to observe even as someone who does not do so as a profession, we have the ability to view the change and progression of our history. Looking back, we can see how our relatives grew up and what was being served to their tables. Some people may even be able to make connections to what’s being served on their table now by comparison.
