This product nor articles similar to it are sold in today’s stores, which makes its current monetary value unknown. However, there is a $10 marking on the cookbooklet that perhaps indicates it was purchased for that amount by the Guelph Library.

The cookbooklet is of ‘Didactic value’ as it aids historians and history students in their research and studies. Similar to this exhibit, the cookbooklet may be used as a piece of ephemera in other exhibits. This cookbooklet may be studied from various perspectives, such as those relating to economy, gender, technology and industrialization to gain an in-depth understanding of the Canadian lifestyle during the late 1800s, which is when this cookbooklet existed.

The introductory pages of this cookbooklet can be analysed to get an insight about specific societal norms during the time. They claim “It talks of thrift, it talks of convenience, it talks of good-for-you, good-to-you eating.(Toast Talk by Weston,pg 2)” Therefore, this commodity was introduced to facilitate quick, healthy and easy to make recipes among the population. This is a key point to note as the time period this product was introduced - late 1880s - is very close to the time period several women started to create their own social organizations and began to go out of their homes more often. Therefore, this booklet was marketed as a quick and healthy meal toward the more outgoing ‘housewives.’

However, this booklet cannot be used for statistical research purposes as it is not 100% reliable. For example, it claims “wheaty taste which everyone enjoys” (Toast Talk by Weston,pg 2), but there is no record of an actual study or survey that was conducted. Therefore, we cannot conclude that it was indeed popular during its time period.
