Assessing the Artefactual Value
There is no doubt that Food News for the Housewife has historical value as it provides an accurate depiction of what a recipe book would have looked like and consisted of in the middle of the 20th century. Depicted on the pamphlet, the financial value is 25 dollars. The last to purchase it however, was the Univeristy of Guelph for 10 dollars (Profit Replaces). Though this gives a little insight on what it would be worth, further research would be needed to get a better idea if it was authentically priced. Along with the financial and historical significance, this pamphlet is also valuable to collectors and those who are sentimental to childhood memories of their mother’s best recipes. One of the more valuable categories is the educational/didactic aspect, and how the world has changed since then. Like many ephemera dated back to a certain time, the information gained from analyzing this pamphlet is more than just recipes. Everything from the way it is phrased to the structure of the recipes educates those willing to learn.
