Exploring the Bigger Picutre

Like many recipes in the 1950s, Food News for the Housewife, is designed for a stay-at-home mother that is preparing a Christmas dessert. It shows her how to prepare a dessert that not only tastes great and is perfect for any occasion but is also able to be made quickly. At this time men were mostly the breadwinners, and it was very common for women to stay home and take care of the household. This includes baking and cooking. Not only does this pamphlet reflect this, but the title states “Housewife” in it. Aside for Gender role speciation, this pamphlet is also directed to a family, and culture. As seen in this pamphlet, it is very evident that homemade baked goods were valued. Food News for the Housewife has recipes that are sub-divided into every occasion during the Christmas holiday even holiday candies that would serve as great gifts.
