Thomas. J. Lipton Limited was mainly a company producing a variety of tea and soup mixes. As seen in the cook booklet there are recipes to cook meals by using their soup mixes and tea recipes. Thomas. J. Lipton was born in 1850 and was 15 years old when he left home to work in New York, he eventually found a job working in the tobacco fields. Finally, after that job he traveled to find work for many years he had worked doing many different jobs. In 1871 he had saved enough money to purchase his own grocery store, and eventually one store turned into three hundred. Tea became very popular around the 1880’s and he decided to invest in it by stocking tea products in many of his stores. When Lipton turned 76 years old he removed himself from his company for a price of four million dollars. In the 1900’s the company had begun selling a variety of products. Anglo-Dutch Unilever was a multi-billion-dollar man, who ran the company and to this day the Unilver company owns Lipton. Troisi (2011) states “people turn to food not only when they are hungry, but also when they desire comfort”, let me tell you soup is a very comforting food. In 1987 Lipton soup products were accounted for 13% of soup sales in North America. In 2000, they began to market their soup products with the caption “Kids Don’t Get Bored”. After this advertisement there was a 9% increase in sales. Still to this day Lipton soup is being sold in most grocery stores and being purchased as easy meals. Unilever now owns the Lipton brand name, they have over 350 brands including Dove, Knorr, Hellmans, Axe, and many more. This company has a sustainable living plan in action “We're working towards ensuring all the tea for our Lipton tea bags comes from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms by 2015” (Lipton, n.d.).
