Gelatin was often used in savoury dishes, such as salads and meat entrees, in the 1930s. Since the Great Depression and desires to conserve food prompted many women to find new ways of serving food, gelatin became a fun and creative way to disguise leftovers. Dishes that incorporated gelatin were usually easy to make and could be stored in the electric refrigerators increasingly appearing in Canadians' homes.
