The cookbook 100 Sugarless Recipes was written and compiled by the Fort William Women’s Air Force Auxiliary, then published by the Erickson Ladies’ Auxiliary. These were Auxiliaries based in Thunder Bay and Toronto, making this book common in Ontario kitchens. The Fort William Women’s Air Force Auxiliary compiled and sold these recipes through the Erickson Ladies’ Auxiliary Canadian Legion, B.E.S.L in Canadian cities. As per their name, this group was based in Thunder Bay, Ontario, inside a now historic park called Fort William. The WAAF was an air component of the British Armed Forces, forming in 1939 and lasting until 1949 when they merged with the Women’s Royal Air Force. Considering their short existence, the publishing of one cookbook was a large accomplishment, especially considering they had the main focus of contributing to the war effort by assisting the RAF (Royal Air Force), and not the civilians at home.
