Did you Know?

The cookbook Salads – All the Year ‘Round was created by the Women’s Institute Branch, which was formed in 1897 in Stoney Creek and is known today as the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario (FWIO). The founder of the Women’s Institute Branch was Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, and her inspiration for creating the organization was actually very tragic. Hoodless suffered the loss of her fourteen-month-old son, who died from drinking contaminated milk. Hoodless felt defeated that she was never educated on how to run a household and realized that other young girls and women were in the same position. To help prevent another tragic event like the one she experienced from happening again, Hoodless created the Women’s Institute Branch, with the goal of educating girls and women on proper household management. She impacted the lives of countless people and today, FWIO works tirelessly to continue her mission.
