Introduction
Nishnabe Delights is a cookbook containing modern recipes with a traditional twist, collected from the Ojibwe and Odawa people of Manitoulin Island and reserves on the North Shore of Lake Huron. Mary Lou Fox is credited with the collecting and editing of the recipes while Martin Panamick lent his artistic abilities to produce illustrations that match the traditional Indigenous tone of the cookbook. Though there is no specified date of publication explicitly stated in the pages, based on the recipes, technologies and the overall quality of the book it is estimated that it was published in or around 1975, making the recipes approximately 43 years old.
This modern indigenous cookbook is made up of 34 pages total measuring 24cm by 16cm and is 3mm thick. Despite its small size, it is compacted with 34 recipes ranging from various categories, all with a native root. The book is covered by an off-white cover page, with a traditional looking illustration of an abstract Teepee, trees, a sunset, clouds and a pot roasting over a fire. The images are black like the font of the title but contain accents of a warm orange colour. The cover does well in keeping with the feel of the book as it holds a very traditional appearance with a very simple yet pleasant image. Nishnabe Delights is a facinating cookbook for those intersted in Indigenous culture and history.
