Meet the Author
While there is no specific author of this cookbook, it was published by the company E. W. Gillett Co Ltd. Incorporated in 1902, Gillett established a factory in Toronto at the corner of Fraser Avenue and Liberty Street in 1912 after an earlier plant was burnt down in a fire in 1904. The company manufactured baking goods, including Magic Baking Powder, perfumed lye and Royal Yeast. Their business objective was to provide quality baking products to consumers that were offered at a reasonable price point. Between 1912-1929 the company released multiple publications to promote their products and their brand. These publications included four editions of the Magic Cook Book and Housekeepers Guide released between 1912-1929. Other titles to promote the Magic Baking Powder were available such as, The Magic Way, The Magic Cook Book, Magic Cook Book and Le Patissier Magic. In 1929, E. W. Gillett Co Ltd. merged with three other companies to become Standard Brands Ltd, bringing an end to many Gillett products. They continued to release larger-format versions of the Magic Cook Book into the 1930s under the ownership of the Standard Brands company. While E. W. Gillett may no longer be the brand, their product Magic Baking Powder continues to be well-known and sold on shelves in stores in the familiar maroon packaging in the twenty-first century.
