Chapter of Hadassah.jpg

The Regina chapter of Hadassah, is a non-profit group of Jewish women from Regina Saskatchewan. This group was created by women for women in 1921. Its creation is important to note because Regina, Saskatchewan welcomed some of its earliest Jewish settlers when Mrs. Isadore Reinhorn and her husband arrived in the 1920’s, in fact Mrs. Reinhorn has a recipe included in this cookbook on page six called “Drawn Butter Sauce”. The reason why Hadassah organizations were created was so that as European Jews escaped religious persecution and started new lives they had community support.

Sadly, the Regina Chapter of Hadassah no longer exists but other Hadassah organizations do in Saskatchewan as many merged together and all over Canada. The Canadian Hadassah organisation was first established in Toronto by Anna Selick around 1914 and was a national federation by 1921. Today it is still an organization dedicated to health care, child welfare, and education in Israel and Canada for women and children. Originally membership into the organization was only for women, although during the twenty-first century it extends to men and people of different religions as well, it has extended beyond Judaism.
