Did you know that margarine had been legally banned in Canada until the ban's permanent lifting in 1948?

Margarine, invented, and patented in 1869 by French Man Hyppolite Mège-Mouries, was an ingredient that had been strictly regulated and prohibited in many countries due to the affects it had on farmers. As a result, margarine had been banned in 1886 by an Act of Parliament in Canada due to the vigorous oppositions dairy farmers expressed. This ban had been lifted between 1917 and 1923 when the First World War prompted butter shortages; however, the ban was effectively put back into place yet again until its permanent lifting in 1948.

Numerous recipes inside Cherished Recipes make use of margarine as opposed to butter. Perhaps this was due to economic situation, or due to an existing dietary fad having occurred during the cookbooks publication.
