The author of Margene Recipes Cookbook is listed as Brenda York, although this name was a pseudonym created by Canada Packers Ltd., the publication company of the book. The real author of the book was Kathleen Hodgins who wrote for Canada Packers Ltd. under the pseudonym, Brenda York, from 1947 to 1951. Hodgins was born in 1923 in Toronto, Ontario and graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts in 1945. She later went on to earn a Master of Arts in Food Chemistry in 1947 and began working for Canada Packers Ltd., that same year. Canada Packers Ltd: had Hodgins create this cookbook likely to promote their new product, Margene, and showcases its many uses to the public. It is unknown whether Hodgins published any other cookbooks as there is very little information about her. The information that can be learned about her comes from Elizabeth Drivers Culinary Landmarks: A Bibliography of Canadian Cookbooks, 1825-1949 when Driver writes that this information on Hodgins came from an e-mail in 2001 sent from Hodgins herself. Subsequently, there are no available images of Kathleen Hodgins, but the created image of Brenda York can be found of the cover of the cookbook. Canada Packers Ltd. owned York brand canned food, thus it is likely this is where the Brenda York name comes from, and the York brand is used in many recipes throughout the Margene cookbook.
