This cookbook is titled, HOW TO SAVE In your Kitchen: BURNS’ Tested Wartime Recipes & Hints. The book was published in Alberta in 1943 by Burns & Co. Limited, a food company that prided themselves in in their canned food products. There is very little historical information about Burns & Co. Ltd, and so it is difficult to assess what the quality of their products would have been. The author is named as ‘Mrs. Margaret Henderson’ with a brief biography following the book’s introduction praising her as a proficient home economist. There are no retail or merchandizing indicators on the book, but since the book was published by a food company, it can be speculated that the book might have been sold along side other Burns & Co. Ltd products or given away to consumers. The publishers did not provide a table of contents that explicitly break-down its contents, but the book gives attention to certain food categories through sub-headings where the recipes can be found, and these categories are framed by the book’s introduction and the hints that conclude the book’s final pages. The introduction is brief, highlighting the book’s main ingredient, Spork, a pork product made by the publisher, Burns & Co. Ltd. It talks about the recipes being cost-efficient and easily prepared for the purpose of saving time and money.
