The Handbook of Home Economics: For Use in Elementary Schools of Hamilton was published by the Hamilton Board of Education without a formally identified author attached. Focusing then on the Hamilton Board of Education, it is assumed to be founded in and around 1856, later amalgamating with Wentworth Country in 1998. Additionally, an important thing to take note of, is that The Handbook of Practical Cookery for the Use of Household Science Classes in the Public Schools of Toronto has recipes that overlap. First written by Margaret Davidson in 1925, this first home economics cookbook for elementary students was said to be republished by both the Stratford and Hamilton Boards of Education. Therefore, it is easy to see the links between this cookbook and others published around the same time. Furthermore, coming into the 1940s there had been a number of advancements in nutritional awareness, undoubtingly having a trickled down effect of the Hamilton Board of Education’s decision to publish a home economics manual. Specifically, Hamilton was the home of the most influential women in promoting domestic science, Adelaide Hoodless. This local influence as well as the opening of a nearby college of domestic science were greatly impactful on the elementary school curriculums.
