This cookbook titled ‘Round the Clock Hostess is recognized as the classic cookbook for the everyday women of Winnipeg, in the late 1940’s. By providing detailed instructions, that are both easy and practical, the book aims to help women host perfect events and gatherings for her family and friends. Alongside quick tips and shopping suggestions, the book offers specific advice for when planning events such as breakfast parties, morning coffee parties, luncheons, afternoon teas, bridge parties, cocktail parties, dinner parties, a buffet supper, specialty entertaining, children’s parties, weddings, and wedding anniversary parties. Factors of hosting an event such as the ideal menu for the gathering, the order in which food should be served, who should attend the event, how to properly decorate etc. are addressed throughout the book based on the event in question. Not only does the book do an excellent job at highlighting the aspects of hosting that are most often forgotten, but it also considers the simplest questions such as, “where should the food come from?”. By providing a description of each dish followed by the price it would have cost from the local Hudson’s Bay Company department store, the book allows the hostess to be as involved in her event as she pleased. It is clear, that every ounce of this books content is written for an audience that is constantly participating in twentieth century Winnipeg’s social events and gatherings as it provides an ideal version of what an enthusiastic hostess was to be.
