Meet the Author
Kate Aitken (1891-1971) was an entrepreneur, journalist, radio broadcaster, cook, and women’s lifestyle guru. Born Katherine Scott, in Beeton Ontario, she married Henry Aitken in 1914, who worked at his father’s mill, where they purchased 10.5 hectares of land near Beeton. Aitken began a successful poultry and canning business from her farm, yearly making over 12,000 jars of preserves, which were sold in a local shop. Kate Aitken was also a freelance journalist, working for various newspapers, magazines, and the federal government. She travelled all over the world for her writing, and interviewed world leaders including Joseph Stalin, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Kate Aitken contributed and worked for the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, beginning inn 1920, she ran cooking and food demonstrations, and in 1938 became the director of Women’s Activities.
Kate Aitken is most well known for being a “pioneer in the broadcasting field.” In 1934, CFRB Toronto broadcast Kate Aitken’s radio show which was later picked up by CBC. Kate Aitken’s radio programs were broadcast for over twenty years, as she was a favourite amongst housewives. She talked about everything from cooking, to etiquette to politics. Aitken had many sponsors for her various radio shows, cookbooks, and articles, including kitchen appliance companies and food companies, which included Good Luck Margarine. This cookbook was written by Kate Aitken in promotion of Good Luck Margarine and her CBC radio broadcast. It is one of fifty-two cookbooks that she wrote throughout her career. Kate Aitken had a prolific career and was a guiding voice for post-war era Canadian housewives. Her contributions to Canadian food culture and broadcasting have left a lasting legacy.
