In 1884, the world's very first packaged and branded laundry soap was released by the Lever Brothers company, which, using a process invented by chemist William Hough Watson, was also the first soap to be commercially made from glycerin and vegetable oils rather than tallow (rendered beef or mutton fat). The soap was originally called Honey Soap, but later was renamed to Sunlight Soap.
