The author(s) of the cookbook Salads – All the Year ‘Round is the Women’s Institute Branch and the Home Economics Service. The Women’s Institute Branch was formed in 1897 in Stoney Creek and is known today as the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario (FWIO). FWIO was officially organized in 1919 and its priority was educating women and providing support programs in the community. Perhaps the most important program that FWIO created was the ROSE (Reaching Ontario Sharing Education) Program. The ROSE program held sessions in the community and informed thousands on social, health, environmental, and domestic matters. FWIO does not necessarily have a culinary background but Adelaide Hunter Hoodless created the Women’s Institute Branch with the intention of educating girls and women on the importance of household management. This included topics like cooking and food preparation, which helps explain why my cookbook of study, Salads – All the Year ‘Round, goes into such great detail on techniques used when in the kitchen. Today, FWIO is a not-for-profit charitable organization that encourages the personal growth of women and advocates for social and economic change within Ontario. I discovered a photo of FWIO in 1949, the same year Salads – All the Year ‘Round was created (pictured below). Although it is unknown whether or not they produced other cookbooks I would assume that they played a part in producing a number of pamphlets, cookbooks, and other educational means since their goal was to help women in domestic environments.
