The Red and White Health, Diet and General Recipe Book was written by and distributed at Red & White Grocery Stores around the year 1935, with this specific book being distributed in Winnipeg, Manitoba. On the cover of the book, there is a small sketch depicting what a Red and White store would have looked like during this time period.

Although this chain sounds like it would be unique to Canada due to its name, Red & White Grocery had stores in both Canada and the United States. On the front page of the cookbook, it states that “The Red & White store of your district is owned and operated by a resident of your community”. By running under the Red & White brand name, these smaller stores were better able to compete against larger grocery store chains. By the 1930s, there were 6700 Red & White stores located in the United States. Red & White stores were also very common in Canadian small towns during the 1920s and 1930s, and in Winnipeg alone there were approximately forty locations. Through a general Google search for this specific store, it seems that it is no longer in operation. Most Red & White stores began to close in the 1950s and there were not many left by the late 1960s.
