How to Save in Your Kitchen was published by Burns & Co. Limited, written by Margaret Henderson. Burns & Co. Limited was a food packaging company founded by Patrick Burns in 1905 under the name P. Burns and Company. Born in Oshawa in what was then Upper Canada in 1856, Burns began his career working closely with his brother as an entrepreneur in the agricultural industry. The conception of P. Burns and Company would be made possible once Burns combined efforts with cattle rancher, William Charles James Roper, giving him the opportunity to expand his enterprises such as packaging and ranching. Burns incorporated his packaging enterprise in 1905, and in 1923 the company was renamed Burns and Co. Limited. The company had many successful years despite labour strikes in the 1920s and the Depression beginning later that decade. Burns and Co. Limited continued to live on after being purchased by Dominion Securities Corporation based in Toronto.

There are few details about the life of Margaret Henderson and many details need to be speculated upon. In 1935, the newspaper the Vancouver Daily Province began a “Modern Kitchen” section, and Henderson was named the first director of this section. “Modern Kitchen” would publish recipes for audiences and host instructional demonstrations with recipe cards for the public. Like How to Save in Your Kitchen, “Modern Kitchen” would continue to employ Henderson when publishing other recipe books that usually focused upon practicality, efficiency, saving money, and giving general household tips and guidance.
