Cooking up History

This short essay will examine the different types of major historical events that occurred during the development and publication of The Bee Hive Cookbook. This short essay will then explain the possible reason as to why The Bee Hive Cookbook was published in the first place.

This particular cookbook was created in 1942 which indicates that this cookbook was created and published during WWII. According to certain writers such as Elizabeth Driver, Ian Mosby, the National WWII Museum New Orleans (website), Steven Horwitz and Michael McPhillips they all indicated that Canadians during the second world war were trying to offer as much support to their allies as they can. These authors explained how Canadians were able to support veterans who were fighting in the war. For instance they stated that one way Canadians supported veterans was to offer up as much food resources and supplies to them as they can. Due to the fact that the majority of Canadian food supplies were being transported to war torn areas, people back home had their food rationed out. With the lack of food resources back at home, Canadian authors, writers, cooks and chefs most likely had to find, write, and come up with inventive and creative ways to try and find alternative methods to supplement some of the food ingredients they use in their dishes/meals. In this particular case the author of The Bee Hive Cookbook as well as the St. Lawrence Starch Company, Limited created a cookbook that allowed wives to have the opportunity to use an alternative method and way to supplement the sweet element, flavor, and taste that sugar had to offer in certain dishes.

The information that I have stated above would help explain the reason as to why The Bee Hive Cookbook was created. The main reason as to why The Bee Hive Cookbook was published was mainly due to the fact that one of the food ingredients that were rationed out and sent to war torn countries was sugar. According to Elizabeth Driver book and research it was due to the lack of sugar that Canada had during the early to mid 1900's that the author of this cookbook (Mary Moore) was asked by a newspaper corporation to find an alternative ingredient that could be used as a replacement for sugar. In this particular case it seemed that Mary Moore found out that the St. Lawrence Starch Company's Bee Hive Corn Syrup was a good replacement for sugar. She ended up getting in contact with the St. Lawrence Company and they ultimately asked her rather or not she was willing to create a cookbook that would feature their product. In the end she agreed and that was one of the major reasons as to why this cookbook was created and published.

Another major historical event that occurred during the development and publication of this cookbook was the introduction to the Canadian Health Food Guide and Rules. The first Canadian Health Guide started at around the same time as the publication of this particular book. According to Ian Mosby book Food Will Win the War: The Politics, Culture, and Science of Food on Canada's Home Front, The War time Canada website (Food on the Home Front during the Second World War) and the Government of Canada website (History of Health Food Guide 1942-1992) they stated that the first nutritional guidelines were first known as Canadian Food Rules until they were later renamed as the Canadian Health Food Guide. According to these two sources the Canadian Food Rules were constructed to accomplish two purposes. The first being to introduce Canadians to healthier diet and the second was to try and make sure that the food guide correlates and compliments the need of the rationing system that occurred during the 1940's. To help advocate their product better the St. Lawrence Company and the author ended up inserting health promoting ads such as The Healthy Value of Bee Hive Corn Syrup ad that was written and inserted in the cookbook. The Healthy Value of Bee Hive Corn Syrup ad that was inserted in The Bee Hive Cookbook is supplied on the left hand corner of this essay. Overall The Bee Hive Cookbook could be used as a reference to explain the different types of historical events that have occurred during the 1940’s (like the WWII affair that was occurring during that time as well as the development and interest in nutrition).
