Eaton’s was an iconic company which thrived throughout the majority of the twentieth century, owning departments stores in almost every Canadian province at its most profitable point in history. The company was founded in 1869 by Timothy Eaton, who was born in 1834 in a small village in Northern Ireland named Clogher. He emigrated to upper Canada in 1854 and gained experience in the business world through the ownership of a general store alongside his siblings, whom also emigrated to Upper Canada not long before Timothy. In 1868 Timothy and his family moved to Toronto leaving the ownership of the general store to his brother James and in 1869 established a wholesale business on his own known as the T. Eaton Company Limited. This company became the first large scale organization which worked in terms of fixed-price, cash only purchase of goods. This provided more financial security than the previous system of traditional bartering and bargaining methods of product exchange. Eaton's company also became well known for its catalogue, from which products could be ordered and shipped to the nearest postal office. The cookbook was produced to advertise a product called the Vapo-Seal Aluminum cooker and additional inserts that could be purchased and used along with it.
