Introduction

The cookbook Apples are Good for You! was published in Ottawa by the federal Department of Agriculture in 1942. It is a wartime cookbook that educates the reader on the different varieties of apples that were grown in Canada and how to utilize them in cooking. This cookbook has a somewhat non-traditional layout and presents the information in the form of a brochure. It is a single page that is double-sided and each side is split up into three pages. The content of Apples are Good for You! is divided into three main sections: types of apples, including when and how to use them; general rules to abide by when using apples in cooking; and a variety of recipes for different needs and occasions that include apple as a main ingredient. The purpose of this book was to promote apple growers in Canada and encourage readers to utilize local ingredients so other foodstuffs could be saved and shipped overseas for soldiers' consumption. As incentive, this cookbook was likely distributed for free, allowing readers to put their money towards the purchase of apples for the recipes offered in the book.
