Meet the Author

An image of the Chippewa Presbyterian Church and Manse that was erected in 1891 and later replaced in 1961.

The author of this book isn’t a single person; rather, the Evening Group of the Ladies' Aid and Cookbook Committee of Chippawa Creek Presbyterian Church were the compilers. The members of this group collected various recipes in order to curate this book. Ladies' Aid groups were common throughout North America in the later 19th and early 20th centuries. In some communities today, they are still thriving. For many women's associations, cookbooks were a way to raise money for worthy causes, whether locally or on a larger scale. For each of the recipes included, the name of the contributor can be found at the bottom of the recipe. As expected, they were all women and presumably were a part of the Ladies' Aid or members of the church's congregation. The original Chippawa Presbyterian Church was erected in 1842 and has been replaced twice since then. The original church was first replaced in 1891 by a larger brick church and manse which can be seen in the image provided. This church would have been the meeting place for the Ladies' Aid Group and Cookbook Committee at the time of the cookbook’s publication.
