Meet the Author

Black and white portrait photograph of a Caucasian man named Matthew Bulloch Dymond. He has a round face, large forehead, short hair, is wearing glasses, and is dressed in a suit and tie.

Good Eating is not associated with an individual author or publisher. Rather, the cookbook was produced by the Nutrition Division of the Department of Public Health in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Nutrition Division was created with the primary purpose of providing nutritional education to schools and community groups across public health regions in Saskatchewan. This objective of sharing nutritional information is evident throughout the health-conscious content of Good Eating. Upon being published, Good Eating was then reprinted and distributed by the Ontario Department of Health. Initially established in 1884 under the title of the Provincial Board of Health, the Department of Health was renamed in 1924 due to the increased compartmentalization of government services. In Ontario, the distribution of Good Eating was completed under the direction and endorsement of Matthew Bulloch Dymond (pictured here). Beginning in the mid-1950s, Dymond was a politician working for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. He served as Ontario’s Minister of Health from December 22, 1958 until August 14, 1969 before moving on to other roles within the provincial government.
