Introduction

Salad Secrets is a cookbook that has a variety of salad recipes that are geared toward housewives wishing to create well-balanced meals for their families. The book was written by Virginia Martin and published in Montreal, Quebec in 1928 by Colman-Keen Canada. The cookbook encourages women to learn more about the variety of salads that they can serve and how to understand their value. It is organized in a way that is easy to follow and offers step-by-step instructions on how to prepare and make the components of a salad, including the dressing, vegetables, and any protein that is added. The cookbook highlights salads of all varieties, including fruit salads, vegetable salads, meat salads, and various sauces that can be added depending on the main course meal that is being served alongside. The cookbook has twenty-two pages and utilizes every page by providing a salad recipe or suggestions for what to make for dinner depending on what foodstuffs are available. The cookbook ranges from easily prepared dishes to more difficult and time-consuming ones depending on the cook's level of skill. The purpose of the cookbook seems to be a desire to offer woman assistance in their meal planning and provide as many options as possible for healthy salad side dishes.
