Introduction

We Entertain: With Salads, Sandwiches, Cakes, Cookies, Desserts, Supper Dishes was compiled in 1935 by the Woman's Association of Hope United Church in Toronto. This community cookbook contains an array of recipes written by members of the Woman's Association and the church. There is no obvious theme to the book except for the fact that the majority of the recipes utilize ingredients and products that were considered commonplace at the time, affordable, and easy to find in the Toronto area. Throughout the book's sixty pages, alongside the recipes are advertisements for local businesses and services. Likely, they paid to have their advertisements included and the money raised went towards the fundraising efforts of the Woman's Association. Typically, cookbooks like this one would have been sold to the congregation or anyone in the local community, and the money raised was used to pay for renovations or improvements to the church.
