The World’s Dispensary Medical Association was a company developed by Ray Vaughn Pierce in the latter half of the 19th century in Buffalo, New York. This figure commonly known as "Dr. Pierce" was devoted to Eclectic Medicine, a practice that rejected the traditional work of credited physicians. These ideologies led Pierce to develop the World's Dispensary Medical Association which, beginning in the 1870s, came to represent a plethora of medical entrepreneurial endeavours. At the forefront of these pursuits was Pierce’s involvement in the manufacturing and distribution of patent medicines. This was an industry of medicinal remedies that were not approved by any sort of government or health agency yet did not have to be transparent about the ingredients list or proven effectiveness. Pierce’s business, and others like it, relied entirely on advertising to sell their products, mainly through the use of testimonials, as we see throughout Good Cooking. Useful Information. Read It. Other examples of marketing from this period include Dr. Pierce’s Memorandum Book and Handbook: Designed for Farmers, Mechanics, Merchants and all People. Following the death of Pierce in 1914, his son Valentine Mott Pierce took on the role of president for around twenty-seven years. It was during Valentine's stint as president that Good Cooking. Useful Information. Read It. was published.
