Introduction

The Manitoba Health Cookbook was written by the United Farm Women of Manitoba and published in 1938. This cookbook has many recipes contained within its 176 pages that are organized by the type of food being prepared. This cookbook has detailed recipes for almost anything one can think of, and it has information on how to prepare, cook, and store the food being used in the recipes. Throughout the cookbook there is information provided about the food in the specific sections to provide the reader with a better understanding of the properties of food. There are also several advertisements throughout the book for businesses, goods, and services located around southern Manitoba. Likely, these advertisements were purchased and the money directed towards the costs of publishing the book. The is a community cookbook, meaning it is not the work of just one person but, instead, was compiled by several different women who were part of the United Farm Women's organization in Manitoba. The women who provided the recipes aimed to give readers variations of and different styles of cooking food to ensure that everyone is able to find some recipes they enjoy and use those recipes. As this is a community cookbook, it was likely produced for fundraising purposes. Proceeds from the sales would have been used to finance different projects undertaken by the United Farm Women.
