Introduction

Knox Almanac and Key to Health is a multi-purpose book published in Fort Erie, Ontario around 1940 by the Knox Company, and contains several spiritual pieces such as palmistry, horoscopes, and dream analysis. Each was written to connect with the reader, often providing predictions of the reader’s lifestyle, including but not limited to their health and wellness. Structured as a health magazine, there are many advertisements and personal testimonials throughout the thirty-two pages. For example, there are several advertisements for pharmaceuticals to improve various health conditions. The one that appears most frequently is a drug called Cystex. There were also numerous references to various diseases and conditions paired with alleged sufferers' stories in the hopes of proving the worth of the advertised pharmaceuticals. There were also generic references to "poisons" and "acids" originating in food. The publication does not address diet assistance to maintain wellness; rather, it focuses on treatment once symptoms are present. There are occasional references to food, including the suggestion to avoid consumption of soda, but largely these are tied to an advertisement for a product. To entice readers to purchase the various pharmaceuticals advertised, many companies offered a money-back agreement or guarantee. Other kinds of health advice, such as First Aid, are also discussed. Treatment for more common types of injuries is provided, as well as complementary imagery where necessary. Some of the information here is still relevant, providing temporary solutions when accidents or illness occurs. Overall, this book claims to offer the reader a wealth of information and advice pertaining to health, though it is clearly an advertising cookbook and its objective is to sell unlicensed health products.
