Introduction
The Housewife’s Year Book of Health and Homemaking was created by the Kellogg’s company and published in London, Ontario in 1937. This thirty-six page book was created with the purpose of helping housewives keep their families healthy through the use of Kellogg’s All-Bran cereal. Specifically, by including All-Bran in their cooking, several ailments associated with constipation could be cured. This handbook also provides housewives with tips related to various aspects of their lives, including keeping children busy, maintaining the family's finances, delivering first aid, house projects, and easy recipes. The subject of constipation is covered thoroughly in the book, especially the dangers of not consuming enough fiber and why Kellogg's All-Bran should be added to everyone's diet. Each of the six recipes offered in this handbook feature All-Bran, and the product is also featured in other areas of the book, including sections about beauty, health, finances, and weight management. The six recipes are for muffins, pancakes, cookies, waffles, gingerbread, and rolls. This cookbook also features information about astrology and how the different moon phases correlate to different events occurring around the same time. Various illustrations are featured throughout that display a completed recipe or illustrate a tip that is being provided. For example, on the “Tips to Safe Reducing” page, there is an illustration of a scale. This book places a strong emphasis on keeping one’s family healthy, and the best way to do that was through the use of Kellogg’s All-Bran cereal.
