Introduction
Original Cooking Recipes was written by Carnol Limited around 1924 and published in Montreal by Carnol Ltd. There have been several reprints of Original Cooking Recipes, the most recent one published in February of 2019. This cookbook was intended for use by the women of the family, and therefore is a fairly accurate reflection of the gender roles of the time. While men were expected to work outside the home to provide for the family, household tasks, such as cooking, were considered part of the domestic labour expected of women. Within its thirty-two pages, Original Cooking Recipes focuses on desserts, and the recipes are divided into four sections: Quick Breads; Griddle Cakes, Waffles, and Crullers; Cakes for All Occasions; and Pastry and Pies. The cookbook also has many valuable cooking and nutritional tips that can be found throughout, including advice for feebleness, loss of appetite, and coughs. Original Cooking Recipes adopts a unique approach to health by including customer testimonials which support CARNOL tonic, a medicine produced by the company who published the book.
