The Manitoba Health Cookbook was compiled by members of an organization called the United Farm Women of Manitoba. This organization was founded in January 1902 when various farmers in Manitoba decided to all meet in one place to discuss the various injustices that farmers were facing, especially the problems they were having growing grain. After a couple of meetings they decided to name the organization the Manitoba Grain Growers Association. In 1908, they began to publish the Grain Growers Guide. This guide was the first of the organization's publications. In 1912, the Manitoba Grain Growers first accepted women as associate members, but it wasn’t until 1914 that women were accepted as full members. A women’s section of the organization was created in 1917 and became known as the United Farm Women of Manitoba (UFWM). The first president of the UFWM was Mrs. Arthur Tooth of Elie, Manitoba.
