Meet the Author

An image of Zam-Buk healing ointment

The author of Good Things and How to Cook, as indicated on the cover page, is “Chef.” The cookbook does not reveal any information about who Chef is or details about them. However, an illustration on the front cover shows a White male wearing a traditional chef's hat and uniform, and holding a copy of the book. Likely, Chef was fictional and the character on the cover did not actually write the book. It is more plausible that the cookbook was authored by employees of the Zam-Buk Company, and Chef was created in order to instill faith in the recipes provided. The Zam-Buk Company was located at 310 Dupont St. in Toronto and they are listed as the publisher of the book. Zam-Buk produced a variety of medicinal ointments, creams, soaps, and herbal remedies. These products were recommended to be used as treatments for skin diseases, eczema, poison ivy, burns, and injuries. Zam-Buk Co. allegedly created this particular cookbook due to the high demand for duplicates of a previous cookery booklet. According to the cookbook, customers who purchased Zam-Buk products swore by their curative properties, as shown through the descriptive stories shared throughout. At the time, Zam-Buk products could be purchased through druggists, medicine vendors, or general stores.
