An image of J. S. Armitage.

J.S. Armitage worked as a druggist/pharmacist and owned his own business called the Paris Palace Pharmacy. Surviving documents note that a Mabel V. Bentley, who graduated with a degree in Pharmaceuticals from an unknown college in Toronto, was employed by Armitage at his pharmacy. Unfortunately, in 1900 the Paris Great Fire destroyed approximately $250,000.00 worth of property in the town, including at least $2,500.00 worth of damages to Armitage’s pharmacy. He was more than just a pharmacist, however, as he also obtained a graduate degree in Opticianry and worked in the education system. There is not a lot of information available, however, about his work as an Optician or if he was even practicing. In the field of education, Armitage sat on the Board of Education for the Paris high school. Between 1907 and 1908, he served as a Senior Warden working in the Brant Masonic District, a role which involved monitoring the Masonic education of all new candidates in the district. Not only was Armitage prominent in the healthcare and education systems, but he was also an avid bowler, participating in many bowling tournaments.
