Introduction

Throughout the early 1920s, the Cowan Company Limited produced several cookbooks, including Cowan’s Cocoa Insures a Wealth of Health. Given the approximate date of publication and its brevity, this quaint little booklet was most likely a free promotional item that consumers would get after collecting and redeeming a set of cards or coupons from Cowan’s products. Most of the publications by the Cowan Co. Ltd. featured attractive illustrations of young children and beautiful, luscious desserts. Cowan’s Cocoa Insures a Wealth of Health is a charming little booklet, which was most likely created to entice Canadian women to buy Cowan's products. The booklet is quite small, consisting of only fourteen pages. It is coherent, easy to read, cheerful, and features various recipes such as desserts and confections. All the recipes within the booklet share a common ingredient: Cowan’s Cocoa. Therefore, it is evident that the Cowan Company Ltd. purposefully made Cowan’s Cocoa the focus of this booklet. They imply that no other product can compare, and that children will desire dishes made with Cowan’s Cocoa. This claim complements the overall message of the booklet, which is that “children thrive on Cowan’s Cocoa.” While this booklet has several intentions and purposes, the main one is quite clear -- to advertise Cowan’s products and convince Canadian women that Cowan’s Cocoa is a vital ingredient in their children’s diets. The booklet attempted to provide homemakers with recipes that were both nutritional and pleasing to the eye in the hopes that their children would request them over and over.
