In 1858, William Thomas Benson, an English immigrant, founded The Edwardsburg Starch Company in Cardinal, Ontario. It was the first corn starch factory established in Canada, and soon began producing corn syrup. In 1906 the company merged with the Brantford Starch Company and the Imperial Starch Company under the name The Canada Starch Company. The company prospered in Canada as a leading producer of starch and corn syrup, and by the 1930s Canada Starch products could be found in nearly every grocery store in the country. Food of the Infant and the Growing Child was produced as part of a broader advertising campaign by the Canada Starch Company, in the hopes of building and maintaining consumer trust and promoting the use of their products through recipes and nutritional advice. A 1953 annual report by the company outlines that because their products are used in the kitchen, “it only made sense” that their advertising was  geared towards women. This fact is quite evident throughout Food of the Infant and the Growing Child. Today, the Canada Starch Company is owned by Ingredion, a leading American ingredient supplier that services over 120 countries. They still have a plant in Cardinal, Ontario, and continue to be known as Canada’s top corn refiner.
