This cookbook was written by the the federal government of Canada's Department of Agriculture. More specifically, it was written by the Department of Agriculture’s Marketing Service with contributions and influence from the Honourable James G. Gardiner, who was Minister of the Department of Agriculture (pictured here). Gardiner was born in 1883 and died in 1962. His involvement in politics began in 1914 when he won a provincial election in Saskatchewan and then spent two decades involved in provincial politics. He moved to Ottawa where he was the federal Minister of Agriculture for twenty-two years. During that time, he assisted with the creation of Apples are Good for You! His career in federal politics ended in 1958 after an election loss. Gardiner’s passion for agriculture began at a young age as he grew up on a farm in Ontario and then went on to take it over.
