Flower Garden Cake is a dessert that can be used for special events and does not include the use of any sugar. The ingredients in the cake include an angel cake, grated lemon rind, egg, saccharin-sweetened lemon gelatin, lemon juice, water, and whipped cream. Saccharin is a zero-calorie sweetener created to replace sugars. It’s zero-calorie because it does not break down in our bodies when ingested. It is 200-700 times sweeter than sugar and is considered safe to eat. An interesting point to take from the recipe is the nutritional information that is provided for each ingredient and the final product. It also includes the different exchanges that are fulfilled by the final product. These exchanges represent the number of servings a diabetic should consume in a day according to the book. This cookbook focuses on healthy options for diabetics and this recipe is a great example that portrays a potential substitute for the usual cakes.

Knadlach(MatzothBalls).jpg

Knadlach is a recipe for dinners typically eaten during Jewish Pass-Over. It is a wheat dumpling consumed in broth or soups. It includes the use of an egg, matzoth, salt, cinnamon/nutmeg, and ice water. The instructions include breaking an egg into a bowl and beating it slightly, then mixing the matzoth meal and the dry ingredients together. Following this, form the dough into balls and freeze them. Finally, boil the dough balls in water and serve them in a soup. The recipe was organized under the category of recipes meant for preparation during the holidays. This is another identifying trait of the book since this dish was specifically meant for Jewish tradition. The methods of preparation for this recipe are extremely simple and to the point compared to cookbooks that are currently being released. There are only 6 steps to this recipe with very minimal text to describe the process
