Lowell Grant

The authors of Bahama Cook and Drink Book is Lowell Grant and Joe Cartwright. There is little information on Lowell Grant and Joe Cartwright but the cookbook and its contents provide some insight into who they were. Within the cookbook there are photographs of Lowell Grant and Joe Cartwright.

From this we find out that Grant was a highly celebrated and awarded barman. In 1963, he was awarded the Schenley International Master Barmen of New York, N.Y., U.S.A. In addition, he was awarded in 1964 the Wine Diploma from the Wine Advisory Board of San Francisco, California. It could be assumed that Lowell Grant worked at Joe’s Restaurant as the head barman, but this is unconfirmed.

Joe Cartwright

Joe Cartwright was the owner and head chef of Joe’s Restaurant on West End, Grand Bahama Island as seen in the photograph of him in the restaurant. In Bahama Cook and Drink Book he dedicates the book ‘To those who patronize my cooking at: Joe’s Restaurant, and to my many friends abroad.’ Furthermore, in the foreword Cartwright describes the success of his recipes and seafood dishes by the repeated patronage of his restaurant. Joe Cartwright can be seen as a successful and popular figure in Bahamian hospitality and tourism.
