Cooking Up History

The Weight Watchers cookbook was made in the nineteenth century era, by this time, cooking was evolving; there were new technologies, research and ingredients available. Flour is a main ingredient for many of the recipes in the Weight Watchers cookbook, especially within the baking section. Wheat became more accessible in the nineteenth century when this cookbook was introduced. A research article states, the prevalence of mildew rust on wheat crops lead early settlers to abandon growing what in favour of local and hardier grains and most daily baking relied on proprietary blends of rye flour, corn meal and wheat flour (Snell. 2014). Historical cookbooks are full of growth and learning, historical cookbooks contain basic cultural content, recipes and instruction but are nothing like what we see today. No pictures, no travelogue, no personal stories of cooking or enjoying meals with friends and family, no broader cultural commentary (Raff. 2019). Cookbooks from the nineteenth century are pretty plain in colour, this cookbook has some red but that is all, the rest is black and white. Food has been photographed, recorded and shared for over a century. It starts in the 1800s, with the first photographs to depict food front and center, and brings us to the present, with the many kinds of images we are so used to seeing now (Turshen. 2017). Although, not much changed most cookbooks from history have changed their logo’s over time. Weight Watchers laundered a website and have updated their logo over the years, small tweaks to the logo has made the company stay with the times. Weight Watchers has consistently been successful over the last continuing 56 years (About us. 2020).
