Introduction

When You Entertain: What To Do And How, by Ida Bailey Allen. The 1932 book was published by CocaCola company in Atlanta Georgia, with the intent of collaboratively promoting the soft drink throughout the book, along with Allen’s content. Recipes that use CocaCola in their ingredients are provided throughout, as well as a bonus page of ‘fun facts’ about the drink.

The book’s intention is to inform domestic women on proper hosting and entertaining practices. Chapter topics include what to wear and how to dress one’s family for specific places and events such as dinner parties or luncheons, appropriate recipes for specific events, kid’s birthday party theme ideas, tableware, proper serving techniques, etiquette, and more.

The book provides domestic women in the 1930s with a guide to look upon and follow for any homemaking inquiries or questions they have, claiming to make the process of entertaining and hosting both guests and the family a breeze. Along with the obvious contents of the book, it also serves as an important historical source with and within itself. The book conveys popular messages and ideas present in the 1930s of gender roles (especially women’s roles), as well as relating to the time of the great depression in which it was published.
