Recipe Card for Turtle Soup

Turtle Soup

Turtle Soup is one of a number of recipes which contain turtle as a primary ingredient within Bahama Cook and Drink Book. This inclusion of turtle as an ingredient highlights the unusual diets of the time and how it was seen as acceptable to consume. In present times due to the wider knowledge of diminishing turtle populations as a result of overfishing and other factors it is looked down upon to eat turtles.

The recipe is laid out in a clear and concise way with the list of ingredients and their measurements followed by the methods of instruction written below. This recipe and the cookbook itself differs from modern cooking and cookbooks with the its omission of photographs or illustrations of what the final dish/drink is meant to look like. This can be an issue as the person following the recipe has nothing to rely on.

Yellow Bird

Yellow Bird is an alcoholic beverage which is rum-based and includes other liquors such as Apricot Brandy and Banana Liqueur. From this ingredient list, it is clear that this drink will be sweet and fruity with the inclusion of other ingredients of orange juice, lemon juice and simple syrup. These bright fresh ingredients suggest this is a cocktail which is easy to drink particularly in hotter climates which the Bahamas is blessed with.

Like many of the other drink recipes in Bahama Cook and Drink Book there is a song accompanying the recipe. For Yellow Bird, it includes a chorus and a verse. This shows how the recipes were seen to be used for celebratory occasions and for pleasure. This links the cookbook to the growing tourism industry in the Bahamas and the North American tourists visiting the island looking for relaxation and entertainment.
