Introduction

The cookbook that I will be doing for this digital exhibit is titled “Woman’s Work: An Age of Challenge by the organization called Montreal B’nai B’rith Women. This cookbook is a community cookbook that was sold to the women who were members of B’nai B’rith and the Montreal community. It was also sold as fundraisers by different organizations and synagogues. The cover of this cookbook represents the time period as it’s 70s vibe. There are many images displayed throughout the cookbook. The images consist of photographs of authors, many advertisements and hand drawn diagrams. There are three colour coded sections in this cookbook. The first section of the book shares “Family Favourites” in which you can see that the members of the Montreal B’nai B’rith have personally shared their family favourites with the community. The second section of the book is more recipes done by the B’nai B’rith women that come under various categories but they don’t indicate who provided the recipes. The third section is done by Gerda Rosner, a lecturer from Montreal Children’s Hospital, who addresses “Recipes for the Weight Conscious”. The fourth section is written by Gerti Flegg, a Health Spa Co-Ordinator who discusses “Why Be Fat” followed by recipes featuring dishes for dieters. The recipes shown in this cookbook have been passed on and tried by families that are all homemade. They seem to feature foods from all food groups, especially the nutritious recipes that are located in Gerda Rosner’s section.
