Did you know?

When the word was first borrowed from the Yiddish word for "portion," it had multiple different spellings. Chalah, challa, halla, and hallah, as well as the plural forms challoth, challot, and hallot, were all used in English when writing about this particular food. Now, challah is the standard English spelling of this egg-dense Sabbath and holiday bread.
